Sending Mail to an Inmate (Mississippi DOC)
Mississippi DOC page on inmate mail. All mail must arrive in a legal or letter envelope, and because of contraband problems inmates do not receive the original paper or envelope: approved mail, including photographs, is photocopied and the copies are given to the inmate along with clear images of the original letter and envelope, while the originals are held 14 calendar days and then shredded. Incoming and outgoing mail is searched and may be censored only for evidence of contraband, criminal plans, weapon or drug manufacturing instructions, blackmail or extortion, coded content or rule violations. Prohibited items include Polaroid photos, nude or sexually explicit photos, metal, glass, hard plastic or wooden items, money orders, packages, cassettes, videotapes and CDs, hardback books, and food, hygiene or medical items. Publications must be pre-paid softcover books with an order limit of three and subscriptions must come from the publisher or vendor. Exact incoming and outgoing address formats are given.
