Sending a Letter to an Adult in Custody (Oregon DOC)
Oregon Department of Corrections page on mailing letters and photos, including the significant mail rule changes that took effect January 13, 2025 under OAR 291-131. Envelopes must show the adult in custody's name exactly as it appears in Oregon DOC records with no nicknames, their Oregon SID number, the correct facility name and full address, and a complete sender return address. Under the revised rules, incoming mail must be written in pen or lead pencil, typewritten or photocopied, with crayon and marker not allowed; it must be on standard-weight white paper of 20 lbs or less, greeting cards are not allowed, and it must arrive in a commercially produced white envelope no larger than 9 by 12 inches, with postcards not allowed. The page lists refused items including non-white, non-commercial, padded, corrugated or security-feature envelopes and cardstock. Care packages are not allowed, and books, magazines and newspapers must come directly from the distributor.
