Michigan DOC Prisoner and Parolee Grievance Process

The Michigan Department of Corrections page explaining the three-step grievance process set out in Policy Directive 03.02.130, which covers alleged violations of policy and procedure and unsatisfactory conditions of confinement. Before filing, the grievant must try to resolve the issue with the staff member involved within two business days of becoming aware of it, unless prevented by circumstances beyond their control or the issue falls under the Internal Affairs Division. A Step I grievance is then filed on form CSJ-247A within five business days of that attempt. Step II is filed on the Grievance Appeal form CSJ-247B with the facility's Step II Grievance Coordinator within ten business days of the Step I response or the date it was due. Step III goes on the same CSJ-247B form to the Grievance Section, Office of Legal Affairs within ten business days, and must include the goldenrod copy of the Step I form plus the Step I and Step II responses. The page notes the grievance process is a prisoner process and that family members and friends may not file on a prisoner's behalf.
