Mental Health Services Inside the Indiana Department of Correction
This Indiana Department of Correction explainer describes the continuum of mental health care delivered by IDOC's contracted provider under the authority of the Chief Medical Officer, covering intake, evaluation, treatment planning, routine interventions, crisis management and discharge planning. It states that patients may request mental health services at any time at no charge, whether or not they are on the mental health roster, and that anyone making such a request will be seen within seven days. At intake — the Reception Diagnostic Center for men and Rockville Correctional Facility for women — a mental health trained nurse screens for history, suicidal ideation, psychotropic medications, substance use and withdrawal; emergency needs are evaluated immediately by a Mental Health Professional, urgent referrals within seven days, and all others get a structured interview within 14 days of arrival. The document explains the A–F mental health classification codes and names the treatment units at New Castle, Wabash Valley, Pendleton and Indiana Women's Prison, plus the Special Needs Acclimation Program units.
