Medical Care

Medical Services (Ohio DRC)

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Medical Services page describes four levels of care in Ohio prisons: general outpatient care through infirmaries at each institution staffed 24 hours a day; skilled nursing at the Frazier Health Center in Orient and Franklin Medical Center in Columbus, plus a specialized dementia unit at Allen-Oakwood Correctional Institution; specialty care through a partnership with the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center providing emergency, inpatient, surgical and specialty clinic services; and telemedicine, implemented in March 1995, linking institutions to Franklin Medical Center and OSUWMC. An FAQ section states that to see a doctor for an acute issue the incarcerated person must complete a Health Services Request form and drop it into a designated Health Services Request collection box at the facility. It confirms 24-hour emergency medical care at every institution, states that co-pays apply in certain situations but no one is denied care for inability to pay, and links the governing policies 68-MED-01 Medical Services, 68-MED-15 Medical Co-Payment Procedures and 68-MED-20 Emergency Services. Medication-Assisted Treatment is offered for moderate to severe opioid or alcohol use disorder.
