Medical Care FAQ (Kansas DOC)
The Kansas Department of Corrections medical FAQ explains how a person in a Kansas prison sees a doctor: they must complete a sick call slip and are charged a $2 fee for the initial visit. Follow-up visits and visits related to a diagnosed chronic illness carry no fee, though a $2 charge applies if someone with a chronic illness is seen for unrelated symptoms. KDOC provides health care through contracted private companies; routine sick calls are held five days a week and each facility provides 24-hour emergency medical, dental and mental health care including on-site first aid, crisis intervention and on-call physician, dentist and mental health professional coverage. A physician is on site at each facility, with nurse practitioners and physician assistants also available. Non-essential services including elective surgery and dental prostheses are not routinely provided. Medical and mental health records are confidential and release requires documented consent using the authorization in IMPP 5-107.
