Medical and Behavioral Health Services (Missouri DOC Division of Offender Rehabilitative Services)

The Missouri Department of Corrections Division of Offender Rehabilitative Services page sets out how prison health care works in Missouri. It notes that health care is required by Missouri Statute 217.230 and by the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments. The Medical Services section oversees comprehensive care provided on a contract basis under a managed-care model; medical units staffed by nurses and physicians operate 24 hours a day at every correctional center, providing care from regular sick call up to Infirmary Care Unit admission, plus X-rays, laboratory work, dental, optometry, audiology, physical therapy, chronic care clinics, telemedicine and emergency care pending transport to a community emergency room. Mental health services are delivered by a contracted provider and audited by departmental contract monitors; everyone is evaluated at intake and any person may request mental health services at any time during incarceration. The page names specialised units including the Social Rehabilitation Unit at Farmington, the Women's Social Rehabilitation Unit at Chillicothe, the Secure Social Rehabilitation Unit at Jefferson City and the Special Needs Unit at Potosi, and describes institutional substance use treatment and reentry linkage.
