Inmate Mail FAQ (Rhode Island DOC)
RIDOC's mail FAQ explains how to write to someone held at the Adult Correctional Institutions. All letters and packages are accepted only through the US Postal Service, and all incoming mail must be in a white envelope except manila envelopes from attorneys. Stamps cannot be mailed in and must be bought through commissary; cash, checks and money orders found in mail are seized and deposited to the inmate account. There is no limit on how much mail an inmate may send or receive as long as postage is paid, incoming non-privileged mail may be opened and read, and mail is distributed within 24 hours of receipt when possible. The page also links the Inmate Mail emergency regulation 240-RICR-10-00-1 effective January 2025 and a Spanish version of the policy.
