Disciplinary Reports and Grievances FAQ (Kansas DOC)

This Kansas Department of Corrections FAQ page explains in plain language both the disciplinary report process and how an inmate addresses grievances. On grievances, it states that before using the grievance procedure the inmate should try to reach an informal resolution with staff who work with the inmate on a direct or daily basis, documented using inmate request forms, and that if an emergency exists and no resolution could be obtained from the unit team the inmate may go directly into the grievance process. It then lays out the three levels: Level 1, submitting a grievance report form to a unit team member; Level 2, submitting it to the Warden; and Level 3, submitting it to the Secretary of Corrections. The disciplinary section describes the hearing rights available to inmates and notes that Class I and Class II convictions may be appealed to the Secretary of Corrections' designee, whose decision is final, with references to K.A.R. 44-13-101 and IMPP 11-119.
