Appeals
Appellate Division, Office of the Public Defender (Maryland)
The Maryland Office of the Public Defender's Appellate Division represents OPD clients in direct appeals from the circuit courts to the Appellate Court of Maryland in criminal, juvenile delinquency and child access cases, and continues that representation if the Supreme Court of Maryland or the United States Supreme Court grants further review. The page explains that a person tried and convicted in circuit court must file a Notice of Appeal in that court within 30 days of sentencing, links a template notice for people who had no attorney, and asks appellants to contact the division afterward to be assigned appellate counsel. It states that a person who pled guilty or was found in violation of probation has no appeal as of right but may file an Application for Leave to Appeal in the circuit court within 30 days of sentencing explaining why review should be permitted, and that district court convictions are appealed to the circuit court.
