Administrative Regulation 448: Inmate Mail (Alabama DOC)
Alabama's inmate mail regulation explains what may be sent, how mail is inspected and how a rejection can be appealed. There is no limit on the number of letters sent or received, but an inmate may receive only two books of stamps per week, four sheets of loose-leaf paper and four envelopes per week, four pages of internet material per letter, and no more than two books and four magazines or newspapers per month. Publications must come directly from the publisher or a recognised distributor. Legal mail is opened and inspected in the inmate's presence and inmates receive two free stamps per week for legal mail. Rejected mail is documented on ADOC Form 448-A, which the inmate may use to appeal to the Warden; if the appeal fails the item is returned at the inmate's expense within thirty days or destroyed.
