About Parole Hearings and Who May Speak (Nevada)
The Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners explains that it does not determine who is eligible for parole or calculate sentence expiration dates; those are functions of the Nevada Department of Corrections, and questions about credits earned and eligibility go to the NDOC sentence management office. Hearings on eligible inmates are generally conducted about three months in advance of the minimum parole eligibility date and are usually held at a Parole Board office and video conferenced to the institution. All hearings are open to the public under NRS 213.130(3), but attendees are observers only except victims, direct family members of victims, and inmate representatives, who Nevada law allows to speak; the Board may also allow brief statements from a supporter as time allows. A prisoner may have a representative present to speak on their behalf, including an attorney, family member, friend or another prisoner, at the prisoner's expense. Results are not announced until four members are in agreement, with notification within 10 working days of ratification.
